The Unveiling of GTA V
Grand Theft Auto V was announced by Rockstar Games on October 25, 2011, a few days after the tenth anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III. Every Rockstar Games web page (even the old Vice City and San Andreas pages from 2002-2004) were replaced with a GTA 5 logo and a release date for the game's first trailer. The page also promoted the Twitter hashtag #GTAV.
The one-and-a-half-minute-long trailer revealed that the game is set in Los Santos, Rockstar's take on Los Angeles, California. Soon after, Grand Theft Auto V was officially announced in a Take-Two Interactive press statement. In the statement, Rockstar confirmed that "Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created." Rockstar also asserted that GTA V is "a bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer [..] focusing on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California."
Game Features
Gameplay
- The GTA V map is the biggest, most detailed and most diverse map in Grand Theft Auto history. It includes urban areas (the city of Los Santos), countryside, desert, mountains and beaches.
- Grand Theft Auto V is the first game since the original where the player can control several characters.
- A unique switching system allows the player to switch between characters almost instantly and at any time when off-mission.
- A number of missions will involve all three protagonists allowing you to switch between them to play different parts of the mission. Therefore you could, for example, switch between playing as a helicopter pilot, a sniper and the man on the ground, meaning that you're always in the action.
- Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto games, the full map is open and free to explore from the start.
- There is a functioning ecosystem teeming with wildlife including animals such as dogs, seagulls, fish and sharks.
- The player can take part in a variety of side missions and activities, including yoga, golf, tennis, bike races, base jumping, scuba diving, jet skiing, triathlons and hunting!
- iFruit, the game's new phone, can be used to snap pictures and upload them to Rockstar Games Social Club to share with the GTA community.
- Players can invest money in the stock market using the Internet app on the phone. Buy low, sell high and earn a tidy profit.
- Character appearances can be customized with new clothes, haircuts and tattoos.
- Vehicles are fully customizable. Customizations include paint jobs, wheels, window tints, horn sounds, grills and spoilers, along with robust performance upgrades to suspension, engine, brakes, and more that make meaningful changes to the way vehicles feel and handle.
- Weapons can be customized at Ammu-Nation with silencers, scopes, extended mags, laser sights, and more.
- The weather system is the most complex system yet in the series, creating beautifully realistic weather effects.
Missions & Heists
- There are 69 main missions in total. Mission types vary among big and small events, explosive, infiltration, super spectacular, family, invasion, hostage recovery, heists and robberies - plus classic GTA missions, but updated and improved.
- Some missions require one character, some require two, while some require all three.
- Of the main storyline missions, there are several complex missions focused on heists in the style of "Three Leaf Clover" from GTA IV. One mission involves robbing a high-end jewellery store in the GTA V equivalent of Rodeo Drive, called Portola Drive.
- Prior to each heist the player must prepare by acquiring weapons, outfits, masks and getaway vehicles.
- A successful heist requires a qualified crew (which you, the player, must recruit) and players must decide whether to go for the cheap setup, which results in a less skilled crew, or the expensive option which results in more profit, however the crew takes a bigger cut.
- The crew members are able to specialize in different areas such as wheelman, gunman, technician, and so on.
- Hiring the same crew members across several heists (assuming they survive) allows their skills to improve.
